Need to catch up on entries.

Need to catch up on everything.

But I had a REALLY BEYOND AWESOME TIME this past weekend, with [livejournal.com profile] the_marchioness, [livejournal.com profile] the_marchioness's friend Moo, and [livejournal.com profile] jennlynnfs!!!!!! Will give details, but let's just say that I think [livejournal.com profile] the_marchioness and I saw more of LA than some Los Angelinos see in their lifetime.

After reluctantly saying goodbye to A, I turned to the apartment.

I've finished moving and started the next chapter of my life: in which I am a Betty Neels heroine. Took pictures teeny tiny apartment. Will definitely share those, and pics from the LA Tour...

But for now?

I REST.

First of all, let me tell you how ardently I admire and adore the new music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Gustavo Dudamel. This should be a more bitter pill to swallow, as I really really really loved Esa-Pekka Salonen with his gorgeous floppy hair and interesting pieces, and cursed his wanting to devote more time to his career as composer. I have not yet watched Dudamel in action, but KUSC is clearly in love with him, because whenever I get in the car and turn on the radio, they are talking about him, broadcasting a concert, etc. And let me tell you the music I have heard has made my heart dance. (Granted, we know I'm a hussy, heart-dancing at the least provocation!) And it's a pity, but I won't actually be watching Dudamel in live action before I leave Los Angeles! I may have to change my plans.

He's also made wild curly hair strangely sexy to me.

I miss Dr. J, clearly.

Yesterday was splendiferous spring meeting of the Jane Austen Society of North America - Southwest Chapter. This meeting was at the faculty center on the campus of UCLA. I'd never been down to Westwood, and to UCLA, and now that I've been there? Man, I'm sad I missed out on all the opportunities to be in such a beautiful, fun corner of the Los Angeles metropolitan area! I love and hate that Los Angeles is pulling out these Eleventh-Hour triumphs. It makes my heart sink to know I have to leave it.

The meeting itself was great. I think I have a magnet for newbies. Maybe it's my young countenance. ;) anyhow, I made more new friends and had an excellent time while Ed Copeland, emeritus of Pomona College, gave us an entertaining and enlightening lecture on Silver Fork novels. They had a wonderfully hilarious panel recounting the early days of JASNA-SW, and a very interesting discussion on the Sadleir Collection in the UCLA Research Library. After the lecture, we had the opportunity to walk over to the Research Library and get to look at the much-coveted Sadleir collection. Oh WOW. the GORGEOUS.

Otherwise, I continue to distract myself write my thesis. I rewatched Howl's Moving Castle today. Mmmm. Even better this time around. Finished Kurlansky, and started on Dickens's Bleak House for May book club meeting.

And...um...hello, DODGERS. WELCOME BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!! The season snuck up on me this year. And I have to say that my life was the better for it. :) I'm so glad that the Boys are Back in Town :)

Man oh man. Spring is awesome.

ETA: Lest you truly worry, please don't. Thesis writing is coming along as its own pace. Regardless, I will hate life for the next two weeks and come out the better for it. This is truly a case where knowing that I can write, and how long it takes for me to write, is clearly working against me.

Weekend roundup )

I know I work during my weekends, but I hate it when the weekend's over, and I feel the "structure" of the week pressing down on me again.

Clearly very loopy today.

Labmate K and I are feeling the severe need for looking at awesome things. For that reason, we're going to gawk at art tomorrow. The only problem is, we're deciding where to go: LACMA or MOCA?

K is really into contemporary art. I enjoy contemporary art, but I don't go out of my way to see it. Which is why going to MOCA with her would be a good idea, as I'll likely not have a better companion to go with, and will likely not go at all if left to my own inclinations.

Of course, I've only been to LACMA once during my first year in a hazy evening party thing, and I've wanted to go back and see it when I was actually aware, etc.

So....

I wasn't as productive as I ought to have been in the week after I defended my props (There's a surprise...) Honestly, though? I had a couple of difficult meetings on Tuesday and Wednesday, felt grumpy. Pondered (once again) my Fate as a Chemist, etc.

The weekend was very peaceful and just what I needed to refresh. Wasn't nearly as productive as I'd wanted, but...well. Can't go back in time. Can't regret it, either. And...I managed to straighten up my apartment a bit, so I cannot regret that at all.

Down to 2-3 components on the fellowship app.

Prof #1 got back to me on two dates he was available for thesis defense. I just hope Profs 2-4 are on board too, esp considering one of them is...Cinco de Mayo!

Can you taste the margarita? ;)

Laser measurements were (to put it politely) quite difficult. But they're also over and have been over since Friday at 2 am, so who wants to dwell over that?

Weekend/outlet shopping was fun. Carrie put together a good performance on her marathon, esp considering she didn't run in the last 4 weeks, was sick, and traveled to Africa, London, Michigan, and California all in the week leading up to the event :)

We were going to stay the weekend with "her friend Dave", but lo and behold, we arrived in SD and I discovered "her friend Dave" is "my friend that I've lost track of Dave" so it was simply awesome to catch up with him. We had ample opportunity! :)

We drove back up this morning. Carrie is slugging out the day in my apartment and recovering. And I'm...working up laser data :P

Time is flying. This is good. I hope it flies until I'm walking down the aisle and getting my own hood.

Ha! I meant to write something on Monday about my weekend and now it's Friday, and there's another weekend ahead of me (this one less fun...bah)

Well, first and foremost, this past weekend was awesome. )

Two purchases )

Computer. Bah. )

All in all, things are going well. Fell off the exercise pattern for two weeks and only did two times each week, but I'm back on it. Need to get back into cooking. But the lab work's going well and I'm chugging along, and so is the writing. I'm on Chapter Nine now. I'm happy and...I'm going to the Dodgers tonight...first baseball game for me this season. Derek Lowe against David Wells. WOOOOOOOOT!

...from my parents visit a week or two ago.

Click here for the set. I can't say that I took the pictures; my dad did. He's an amazing photographer (hobby). I totally cut out a lot of the pictures, and I felt bad doing so. But I think these are the ones that expressed the pure joy and beauty of being around my folks. :)

But this is my favorite )

I was finally able to be productive in lab on Friday, and so ended up staying in late. HOWEVER, when I woke up on Saturday, I felt no guilt whatsoever in selfishly staying in bed and reading until 3 pm. :p (Finished Purity in Death) It was [livejournal.com profile] kilroi's birthday, so I went to her place for her BBQ, which was fun. J & I took off for Anaheim to watch the Orioles v. Angels. It was a great game to watch if you're an Angels fan, resulting in 10-1, Angels!!!

Sunday, J and I made a run for it and drove down to San Diego for the day. We had a yummy brunch in Ole Madrid and went to watch the Cards v. Padres at Petco Park. Despite scoring eight runs (including a 3-run dong by the awesomely awesome Albert Pujols), the Cards still ended up losing, as the Padres scored ten!! It was crazy!!! We had a roamntic stroll and dinner in La Jolla Cove before reluctantly returning to Pasadena.

Things are considerably better now. Woke up feeling like crap. Most likely allergies. Thought I wouldn't do well at lab, but I knew I had to come in. As it turns out, it was the best thing to do; I feel much, much better. I hope this doesn't mean I'll turn into one of those sickly people who always has to stay in lab because the outside would literally kill them. :p

Major important event in the life and times of C:

I ate a banana. Not in the guise of banana bread, or a banana split. An honest to goodness, real life banana.

*feels proud*

I also ran/walked my first 5K. My roommate is a coach for the program Girls on the Run. Basically the girls meet with the coaches twice a week for the period of 10 or so weeks, and they go for runs in preparation for a 5K run. for the 5K, they try to team the girls up with running buddies, people who will help the girls stay motivated, and will keep the girls company. So I was a running buddy for a charming and adorable 3rd grader. It was a really pleasant and enjoyable experience; I would have loved to have this while I was growing up. I was rather indifferent to running, most likely because I didn't have the self-discipline to keep on going. It would have been nice to be in a program that trained me to push myself a bit more. :)

Yesterday night was LA Phil playing Beethoven's Ninth. o.O Heart is still soaring from such an inspiring performance!

Hm.

A costly weekend. )

Overall, a nice weekend. The laser is down, so the progress I can make on my project is a bit limited. I'm doing what I can in turning out starting material, though.

Hi!

Happy Monday!

Due to the holiday, the campus is fairly empty, and it's a bit inconvenient because the campus cafe is closed and all the building doors are locked. Still, it feels quieter on campus and hence I am happy to be in today.

J's got a surprise planned for me today. I'm to meet him at 2:30 to find out what it is!! Eeee! Just wnat I was sure the suspense would be satisfied at the end today, he informed me that he's got another one planned for the near future as well! So I shall pout and wonder a bit longer...but J is a sweetheart.

I had a really great (and draining!) weekend! Met up with [livejournal.com profile] jennlynnfs, [livejournal.com profile] bijoux, and Liz for tea at the Huntington, followed by Christmas and a North & South (non-Patrick Swayze) marathon. [livejournal.com profile] bijoux has made an awesome quilt for me for Christmas!!! I wanted to take pics, but my camera was at work. Will contrive to remember to bring it home tonight for pics.

Anyhow, between goofing off and munching on happy snacks, we ended up staying up until 6 am! I had to shoo them out (sorry, ladies!) and get some sleep!

Did not manage to muster up the energy for laser measurements, but I did learn manage to crocet a potholder this weekend. :p

A fairly useless weekend where I accomplished less than I had wanted.

All the same, still very fun. )

Today, I just discovered that there are trailers all along Wilson. There are rumors that Luke Perry is somewhere on this campus filming a made-for-TV movie. No idea whether or not there is substance to these rumors, but apparently, they were here last week too.

Heh.
