Cooking for others.

Without a doubt,
kilroi, you will inevitably tease me for not inviting you over first to sample my cooking, but let me tell you that if you e-mailed me first thing in the morning, you too would have gotten an invite.
Yesterday, high school friend Courtney e-mailed me, asking me out to dinner. This was a definite no-can-do, as I'd been revving myself up for cooking again (Yep, still cooking once a week! And still alive!). Reluctant to change my plans and struck with a (stupid) moment of brilliance, I wrote her back, "I can't go out tonight. I'm cooking. But you're invited."
And she accepted!
And then, when I went downstairs (J works in the lab downstairs...aren't we the nerdy pair?) to talk to J, he said "Uh...isn't your apartment really dirty and stuff?" followed by "Do we have enough food?"
And I went "OMFG, you're right."
Not to be distracted from the important things in life, I made my fluorescence measurements and really lucked out that I finished early. I had two and a half hours until my guests arrived. Ran home, grabbed the car, got some more fish and tomatoes and bread. Then I hit the bathroom and cleaned as feverishly as I could, and straightened up the living room.
Started cooking a half hour before Courtney and her boyfriend showed up. But after I started the fish, J asked me "Do you know if they like fish?"
NOT EVERYBODY LIKES FISH?!? I do not get this. I thought everbody likes fish. Everybody I know in RL with whom I've had the pleasure of sharing meals loves fish. But sure enough, J told me that not everybody likes fish! Weirdos.
We lucked out; they both liked fish. They do not, however, like tomatoes. There the tomatoes were sitting on their plates. Lonely. Uneaten.
?!? NOT EVERYBODY LIKES TOMATOES?
What's wrong with the world? (says the girl who is terrified of bananas, which I understand are actually very popular as well)
Anyhow, Courtney and her boyfriend stayed pretty late and it was actually lots of fun. It was my first time meeting Courtney's boyfriend, and he's really funny.
All the same, I think I will back off the whole "invite others to dinner" thing for a while.
I was nervous all evening while preparing dinner because I was worried that my guests wouldn't really like dinner, and that made me really think about how much I trust J. It's kind of sweet in a strange way. J is really a dear. He'll eat anything and everything I put in front of him. That's love, right? I'm not afraid of failing in front of him, and that's strange but also very comforting to know.

Date: 2005-12-02 07:50 pm (UTC)Aw, I'd say that's definitely a good thing.
I'm glad the dinner turned out well in spite of those tomatoes. For the record, I liked mine cooked not raw. Although I'm a whole lot better about them in salads and such, meaning I'll eat them at least but may not be happy about it. :P
Fish and tomatoes though? You can cook for me anytime, C! Sounds yum. :)
